How I’ve Been Managing Anxiety

Anxiety is a common mental health condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It can be overwhelming, persistent, and can negatively impact our daily lives. Over the years, I’ve struggled with anxiety and have found ways to manage it effectively. In this article, I’ll share the techniques I use to manage anxiety and why I think it’s important to talk about anxiety.

How I’ve been managing anxiety

Managing anxiety is a personal journey, and what works for one person may not work for another. For me, I’ve found that a combination of techniques helps me manage my anxiety. These include:

Exercise: I find that physical activity helps me release tension and improve my mood. Whether it’s a brisk walk, a yoga class, or weightlifting, exercise helps me manage anxiety.
Meditation: Taking a few minutes to sit in silence and focus on my breath helps me calm my mind and reduce anxious thoughts. I use guided meditation apps like Headspace or Calm to help me with this practice.
Journaling: Writing down my thoughts and emotions helps me process them and gain perspective. I find it especially helpful to journal before bed as it helps me unwind and sleep better.
Social support: Talking to friends or family about my feelings and concerns helps me feel less alone and more supported. It’s important to have people in our lives who we can trust and turn to during times of stress or anxiety.

The techniques that help me

Each person’s journey with anxiety is unique, and the techniques that help me may not work for everyone. However, here are a few additional techniques that I’ve found helpful in managing my anxiety:

Breathing exercises: When I feel my anxiety rising, I focus on my breath and practice deep breathing exercises. I inhale for four seconds, hold for four seconds, and exhale for four seconds. This helps me regulate my breathing and calm my body.
Self-care: Taking time to care for myself, whether it’s taking a warm bath, reading a book, or getting a massage, helps me feel relaxed and less stressed.
Mindfulness: Being present in the moment and focusing on my senses helps me ground myself and reduce anxious thoughts. I’ll often do a quick body scan, where I focus on each part of my body and notice any sensations.

Why I think it’s important to talk about anxiety

Anxiety can be isolating and scary, and it’s important to talk about it openly and honestly. When we talk about our struggles with anxiety, we can break down the stigma around mental health and create a more supportive and understanding community. Talking about anxiety can also help us learn from each other and discover new techniques for managing our symptoms.
